THE main suspect at the centre of the Madeleine McCann investigation asked a number of people to give him an alibi for the night she was snatched, it emerged yesterday.
And questions were raised after reports that Robert Murat, above, had telephone conversations with Russian Sergey Malinka soon after the child went missing – despite saying they hadn’t spoken for months.

A number of internet sites have registered addresses similar to the official campaign, in the hope of exploiting the worldwide publicity.
Robert Murat hired a car after discovering he was under police surveillance, it was revealed last night.
Police are investigating why Murat, the main suspect in the abduction of Madeleine, hired a baby blue Hyundai Getz from Audio Rent III Car Hire nine days after the four-year-old vanished.
A former women colleague at an Algarve internet firm claimed Malinka boasted he had sexual intercourse with a 14-year-old girl.
When she told him he could be arrested she said he simply laughed it off. He also claimed he had seduced the 16-year-old daughter of a Portuguese girlfriend. Another ex-woman work colleague at a different firm told how she found downloaded pornography on his computer. She said: “It was top- shelf stuff, boys’ stuff, blue movies. I didn’t mention it to him.
Police had confirmed they were keen to find a Russian male who had a “close” business association with Murat. And yesterday morning police cars screeched up outside an apartment block and seven uniformed officers carried out a dramatic raid on the rundown fourth-floor flat owned by Malinka’s parents.
MADDY suspect Robert Murat has spoken for the first time since he was questioned by Portuguese police and claimed: “I’m a scapegoat.”
POLICE investigating the disappearance of Madeleine McCann in the Algarve do not have enough evidence to arrest the main suspect, they said tonight.
Chillingly, Murat said: “I know how it feels to Madeleine’s parents because I have a daughter aged three and a half who I am in a custody battle over.”
PORTUGUESE police are tonight searching a villa just 150 yards from where Madeleine McCann went missing.
Forensic detectives sealed off Casa Liliana in Praia da Luz, where a British man lives with his mother. He was taken to a local police station for questioning.
